Human Rights Action condemns the attack on the property of journalist Darko Ivanović, author and editor of TV programme “Robin Hood”, whose car was damaged on 16 December 2013.
This latest case of destruction of a journalists’ property, as well as other frequent attacks, incidents and threats, are a clear indication of how journalism has become a dangerous profession in Montenegro, and confirm the need to urgently take all necessary measures to protect journalists in performing their professional duties.
The best prevention of new attacks would be through effective investigation and punishment of this and all recent attacks against journalists. Otherwise, the state becomes responsible for the unsafe environment that prevents freedom of expression, democracy and progress of our society. Therefore, we appeal to relevant authorities to urgently take all measures within their competences in order to solve this and all other attacks on journalists, because the climate of impunity that currently exists in Montenegro encourages new attacks and suppresses media freedom.
