25/10/2024HRA TO THE DEMOCRATS: ENSURE SCHOOL POLICE OFFICERS AND RESPECT HUMAN RIGHTS
The Human Rights Action (HRA) responds to the Democrats’ statement by emphasizing that it has always warned against unfounded pressures on the judiciary by every administration.
We point out that, for example, solely on the topic of inappropriate pressures on the judiciary, we criticized the former DPS administration at least six times, as evidenced by our previous statements on the matter (see below).
We call on the Democrats to explain, instead of attacking the judiciary, what falls within their authority as the executive power—why, during their time in power and with their member serving as Minister of the Interior for the past year, they have not ensured the presence of school police officers, a measure requested by HRA as well as school principals in Podgorica.
The Democrats are the ruling party and have a particular responsibility to respect judicial independence and human rights. They must not arbitrarily attack the judiciary simply because it does not detain people, including minors, as a form of punishment.
As for the criticism regarding our lack of response to the statement of an opposition representative, once the Democrats are in opposition, we will monitor their positions less closely as well.
